A PHP website is a dynamic website. Dynamic meaning that the webpage content can change depending upon a user's interaction with the website. In a static HTML webpage the content is hard coded into the document file. In a dynamic webpage, data is sent to the web server, then content is served to the user, usually from a database. PHP is the most popular of all dynamic web page scripting languages. Other common dynamic webpage languages are ASP, .Net and Cold Fusion.

Just like with HTML webpages, there are numerous additional scripting languages that work in concert with PHP webpages, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, Actionscript, and others.
