Magento Commerce is widely accepted as the world’s best shopping cart software. The steps involved in the initial setup of Magento can be elaborate. Here are some common procedures performed when installing and configuring a new Magento ecommerce website:

• Create Hosting account
• Create Database
• Install Magento
  Select a preset theme for cloning (default, blue, modern, blank, iphone)
• Clone theme directory: skin/frontend/default/ to skin/frontend/default/client
• Clone template directory: app/design/frontend/default/default to app/design/frontend/default/client
• Copy contents of app/design/frontend/base/default/ to app/design/frontend/default/client
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>General>Country Options – specify Default country
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>General>Locale Options – specify Timezone
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>General>Store Information – add Store Name, Phone and Address
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Web>Default Pages> – change CMS Home Page
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Design/Themes – type the theme name, ‘client’,  into the following fields:  Templates, Skin (Images / CSS), Layout, Default (see figure 1)
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Design/HTML Head – specify content for fields:  Default Title, Default Description,  Default Keywords, Miscellaneous scripts (if applicable)
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Design/Header – specify content for fields:  Logo Image Src, Logo Image Alt, Copyright, Miscellaneous HTML (if applicable)
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Store Email Adresses> General Contact – change fields:  Sender name and Sender email. Repeat with> Sales Representative, Customer Support, Custom Email 1, Custom Email 2
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Store Email Adresses>Contacts>Email Options – specify field: Send Emails To
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Shipping Settings>Origin – Specify fields: Region/State, ZIP/Postal Code, City
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Payment Methods>Saved CC – change Enabled to No
• Magento Admin:  System>Configuration>Advanced>Advanced>Disable modules output – disable any unused modules, e.g.,  Mage_AdminNotification, Mage_Paygate, Mage_PaypalUk, Phoenix_Moneybookers
• Magento Admin:  System>CMS>Pages
  • CMS Page>Page Information – change Page Title
  • CMS Page>Content – change Content Heading and content body
  • CMS Page>Design – change Layout (e.g. 2 colums with right bar)
  • CMS Page>Meta Data – add Keywords, add Description
• Magento Admin:  System>CMS>Pages>Customer Service – replace Ispum with default customer service content
• Magento Admin:  System>CMS>Pages> Create Privacy Policy page and install default privacy policy content
• Got to Magento Admin: System>CMS>Static Blocks -
  • specify Footer Links
  • create new static blocks Block Title, Identifier, Status, Content

• Magento Admin: System>CMS>Poll Manager – Change to How Did You Hear About Us, or Poll Information: change Status to closed
• Magento Admin: Catalog>Reviews & Ratings>Manage Ratings – Add rating “Overall Rating” and specify visibility

• Magento Admin: Catalog>Manage Categories>Default Category – Add Subcategory
